Young Against EU Membership.
EU membership means transferring decision-making power to the European Union in the policy areas under its remit, such as energy, fisheries and agriculture. Icelandic fisheries would have to submit to the EU's Common Fisheries Policy. Control over Iceland's resources is best kept with Icelandic authorities, not in an office in Brussels 2,000 km away.
Joining the European Union is a lengthy process that requires constitutional amendments and would move important decisions away from Icelandic voters and Althingi to EU institutions. Iceland's influence within the Union would be limited, with its voting weight in the European Parliament under 1%. Iceland would also have to pay into the EU as a member, unlike recent EU enlargements where new member states have generally been net recipients from the Union's funds.
Iceland's EU membership is not an automatic fix for the problems we face, for example in housing and high interest rates. Such problems will above all be solved through responsible economic management and a clear housing policy here at home. Before the euro could be adopted, Iceland would have to meet certain conditions. If those conditions were met, a substantial part of the very problem that EU membership and the euro are said to solve would already be solved.
